Excursions & Activities
Ski slopes for all ages
If you book your white weeks or weekends at Albergo al Forte, there will be no need to take the car, bus or taxi to go skiing, just put on your boots and step out the door. The Sky-area S. Colombano includes slopes that extend on both sides of the mountain. One is our side, which from Le Motte (1430 m), a hamlet near Oga, will allow you to reach an altitude of 2550m at Dosso di Le Pone; the other side descends to the town of Isolaccia, on the road to Livigno. Skiing in San Colombano is especially suitable for beginners and children. Our slopes are all rated as medium to easy difficulty. The slopes, especially during peak tourist season, are appreciated by those who love skiing in peace and quiet, away from the crowds and queues of the nearby and renowned ski area of Bormio (visit the website for more information); but also by ski mountaineering enthusiasts, given the beauty of the routes through the woods and the unmissable views of the valley below.
The Fort of Oga
The Fort of Oga is located at an altitude of about 1730 meters above sea level in a place that was identified with the toponym of Dossaccio. Planned in the early 1900s, initially at Motte di Oga, it was later built here between 1908 and 1914 to defend the main alpine passes in case of a possible conflict with Austria and a potential enemy crossing from nearby Switzerland. From this dominant position, Bormio could easily be attacked from all the main access routes to Alta Valtellina, from Foscagno to the valleys of Fraele, from Stelvio-Umbrail to the paths leading to the valleys of Valfurva.
Since 1938, the fort has been named after Captain Corrado Venini, who was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor for falling in combat during World War I while fighting against the Strafexpedition that broke out in Trentino in May 1916. Interestingly, his son Giulio would meet the same tragic fate, falling in combat in Greece in 1941. [...]

Mount Masucco and Corno San Colombano
Taking the path that starts from the Hotel, a beautiful dirt road, of military origin, branches off. The predominant fir in the lower part gradually gives way to larch and Swiss stone pine as you climb in altitude. At around 2000 meters, you reach the Sposina area, with some renovated huts and a fountain. Continuing for another 200 meters in altitude, you arrive at the Masucco alpine pasture (2375 meters). For the more daring, there is also the possibility to climb up to the peak of M.S.Colombano (3022 meters).
This excursion is also possible in winter with skis or snowshoes.
The Paluaccio bog
Just a stone′s throw from the Albergo al Forte, you can immerse yourself in the small world of the Paluaccio di Oga. A rarity of times past, as bog environments have almost completely disappeared from our country, and of times past because the bog preserves plant species typical of the post-glacial cold phases. Therefore, the Paluaccio di Oga is not only a tourist gem but also very important from a scientific point of view.
The Horses′ Road
From the old starting point of the Oga chairlift (1500 m), a road branches off towards 1730 m in the area of La Mandria. After crossing a small bridge, a short and slightly steep section is climbed before continuing on a beautiful path through the woods, along the edge of meadows and pastures.
It is called the Horses′ Road.
From Oga to Calosio
From the small square with the fountain in Oga, take the road heading south (the side road of the one that goes down to Bormio). This walk is very easy, even with the slight difference in altitude. Once you reach Calosio, a tiny hamlet of Oga with only a few stables and summer houses, the road becomes a path that enters into the woods. From here, the view of Bormio is unique.
On September 7th, a non-competitive walk from Cepina to Calosio is organized up to Calosc.

History

The Venini Fort, better known as the Oga Fort, is located just a stone′s throw away from the Albergo al Forte. It was built between 1909 and 1912 in a strategic position on the hill known as Dossaccio. From this place, one can dominate the entire surrounding area, from the Foscagno Pass to the Torri di Fraele, from the Stelvio Pass to Valfurva. Unlike the nearby Sertoli Fort in Tirano, during World War I, the Oga Fort was an important theater of war operations due to its proximity to the Stelvio front.
It is a very sturdy architectural structure, essentially made up of two separate buildings separated by a long courtyard and built with large blocks of stone and cement. It had underground water tanks, a power generator, an infirmary, kitchens, dormitories and bathrooms and even an air heating system, later replaced by a water system with radiators. It also had an underground powder magazine, rooms for ammunition packaging, a command room with a firing observation post, caponiers and retractable turrets for machine guns. Finally, one can admire the four cannons placed on rotating platforms and protected by equally powerful armored domes. These were 140/20 cannons with a maximum range of 13 km and were able to hit targets beyond the Stelvio Pass all the way to Trafoi Valley. The shooting was adjusted based on radio signals sent by soldiers stationed on nearby mountains.
The Oga Fort is a piece of Italian history that is still perfectly preserved thanks to recent restorations. Surrounded by dense vegetation and with breathtaking views of Bormio valley, it is a top tourist attraction.
