The Venini Fort, better known as the Oga Fort, is located just a stone′s throw away from the Albergo al Forte. It was built between 1909 and 1912 in a strategic position on the hill known as Dossaccio. From this place, one can dominate the entire surrounding area, from the Foscagno Pass to the Torri di Fraele, from the Stelvio Pass to Valfurva. Unlike the nearby Sertoli Fort in Tirano, during World War I, the Oga Fort was an important theater of war operations due to its proximity to the Stelvio front.
It is a very sturdy architectural structure, essentially made up of two separate buildings separated by a long courtyard and built with large blocks of stone and cement. It had underground water tanks, a power generator, an infirmary, kitchens, dormitories and bathrooms and even an air heating system, later replaced by a water system with radiators. It also had an underground powder magazine, rooms for ammunition packaging, a command room with a firing observation post, caponiers and retractable turrets for machine guns. Finally, one can admire the four cannons placed on rotating platforms and protected by equally powerful armored domes. These were 140/20 cannons with a maximum range of 13 km and were able to hit targets beyond the Stelvio Pass all the way to Trafoi Valley. The shooting was adjusted based on radio signals sent by soldiers stationed on nearby mountains.
The Oga Fort is a piece of Italian history that is still perfectly preserved thanks to recent restorations. Surrounded by dense vegetation and with breathtaking views of Bormio valley, it is a top tourist attraction.
